Position Summary
The Senior Manager Plant Operations has accountability for the production of safe metal (nickel and cobalt) including safe reliable and cost-effective operations of processing plant that represent Ambatovy’s core product value stream.
The Senior Manager Plant Operations is a key position and works collaboratively with the Ambatovy peers focusing on strategic planning and delivery of safe and cost-effective production, with best alignment with environmental practices, and people development and localization planning.
Essential is the close coordination with peer Senior Managers including the Senior Managers responsible for Maintenance & Reliability, and Mine Operations. This coordination will be essential in driving production to a sustainable +40,000 tpa by 2027. Emphasis will be on achieving high level of operating time coupled with maximizing the nickel ore delivery rate from the Mine Operations via the 220 km Ore Slurry Pipeline. Working closely with the Senior Manager of Maintenance & Reliability to drive a culture of high reliability and availability of unit operations with drives nickel production to a sustained production above 40,000 tpa.
The Senior Manager Plant Operations will be coaching and mentoring and developing a team that will progressively rely on a declining number of Expat employees, and an increasing dependency on a National workforce which will progressively be promoted to more responsible positions with the Operations and in the Ambatovy organization.
The role will be a key member of senior management that will be focused on elevating the operational performance, cost performance and striving to deliver consistently on annual and long-term Business Plans.
The role sets goals to achieve business objectives aligned with the Sponsors and Executive Committee and the role will reinforce and support a business objective of sustainable nickel production at an AISC of $6.50/lb or less.

Position Specific Accountabilities
- Responsible for Plant Operations overseeing the PAL, Utilities, Refinery and BCO including port and railway operations.
- Strive for operational excellence with focus area on:
- Systems of work established that create predictability, reliability and consistent quality of operations to meet, safety, financial and environmental targets;
- Simple, effective communication of objectives and performance against targets across all areas within the sphere of accountabilities;
- Continuous improvement culture (debottlenecking, stabilization and reliability) established;
- Balanced and prudent use of capital to sustain and improve operational performance; and
- Cost optimization plans driven by simple, effective and routine cost management in close coordination with the Senior Manager of Maintenance & Reliability, Supply Chain Management and Finance teams.
- Support organizational culture and team development: including recommending specific training and skills development investment in the team,retention strategies for key critical roles and personnel
- Establish and maintain a healthy, performance-focused organizational culture by demonstrating personal commitment to role model the desired behaviors with respect to safety, risk, values and performance management; and
- Encouraging a high degree of collaboration, transparency and culture of coordination to achieve common Company goals which deliver expectional value achieving sustainably an AISC of $6.50/lb or less.
- Establish and maintain a high-performance team with particular attention to: increasing leadership and applied performance management capability; identifying, developing and harnessing National talent; and putting in place effective succession planning.
- Drive a culture of teamwork that encourages transparency and escalation of concerns and problems that are effectively managed and resolved.
- Encouraging team resiliency in the face of operational challenges
- Ensure policies and HSE standards are adhered to:
- Understand, communicate and comply with the Ambatovy Health, Safety, Environment and Quality (HSEQ) Policies and associated documentation;
- Support the business plan process, and ensure it aligns with the intent of the HSEQ Policies and associated objectives;
- Ensure there are adequate financial, human, technological and organizational resources to manage HSEQ risks, drive continuous improvement of HSEQ performance, and to control and recover from disaster and emergency situations;
- Provide direction in an emergency situation;
- Hold team members accountable to compliance with Ambatovy HSEQ policies, rules and requirements; and
- Coach team members to better performance of required HSEQ tasks and provide the necessary support to remove obstacles and challenges that impede the team’s ability to achieve safe and efficient production
- Processing/Chemical Engineering Degree Required
- Exposed and Familiar with Large Scale Open Pit Mining Operations
- MBA preferred
- Leadership Training preferred
- > 20 years of mining and large-scale industrial experience in relevant industry with at least 10 years in senior level position.
- Successful track record leading large teams and leading change
- Good leadership and communication skills
- Practical experience in mining and plant trouble shooting
- Good understanding of finance practices
